Xue Huizhong
Xue Huizhong is a multidisciplinary artist, picture book author, and practice-based PhD researcher in Design at the University of Edinburgh. She holds a BA in Information Design and Picture Book Creation from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and an MA in Illustration from the University of Edinburgh.
Her practice spans ball-jointed dolls (BJDs), ceramics, picture books, and digital media, with a focus on the relationships between body, material, imagination, and narrative. She often works with dolls and handmade objects as creative vessels, using making, modification, assemblage, and photographic documentation to explore subtle and evolving connections between objects and bodies. Her work carries a fairy-tale-like, dreamlike sensibility and an interest in transformed bodies, opening up imaginative spaces around growth, perception, memory, and metamorphosis.
In recent years, she has also explored the integration of handcraft and digital technologies, investigating the possibilities that emerge between traditional materials, image generation, and contemporary media. Her practice values the traces that materials accumulate over time, constructing emotionally resonant and narratively charged worlds through a delicate visual language.
Her picture book Flower Rover was published by China Children’s Press & Publication Group and is permanently collected by the CAFA Art Museum.
